Perks of Fall Planting

Did you know Fall is one of the best times of the year to plant? Decreasing daylight and cooler night temperatures signal the plants to stop producing foliage and increase root production. Planting at this time of year promotes strong, healthy root systems and decreases the amount of stress that the plant will endure when being moved to a new location. Even though the air is cooler around us, the soil temperature is still warm enough to develop and grow root systems, extending the root growing season well beyond the first frost date. During this time of the year there is also reduced pest damage and much less competition with weeds, giving your plants the best chance to establish themselves and their root systems.
In addition to encouraging root growth, plants also receive an increased dose of pH balanced rain, great for optimal plant health. Given the sheer amount of rainwater that the Pacific Northwest receives, most installed plants will require little to no additional irrigation during fall and winter months. Making good use of natural climate patterns not only decreases potable water usage but also the costs associated with such use: a win-win for your wallet and the environment!
